As a practitioner, I am a Physiokinetix Manual Therapist, Master Myoskeletal Therapist, an Alaska Licensed Massage Therapist lic#130033, Spartan SGX & DEKA Transformation Coach, Reparative Movement Specialist, Educator and a Nationally Certified CBD Clinician. My family calls me all kinds of names, but my friends call me Seamus (pronounced - SHAme us). My interest in Physical Medicine started when I received a treatment myself and was solidified while I was in school to become a LMT. Currently I am the only Practitioner in the state of Alaska to hold certifications as a Physiokinetix Manual Therapist, Master Myoskeletal Therapist, Medical Massage Practitioner, and Human Movement Specialist. In addition to being a Certified Personal Trainer, Corrective Exercise Specialist, I'm also the only Certified Spartan SGX & Spartan DEKA Coach through Spartan Race OCR Training. Understanding the mind and the body have to be in sync in order to perform optimally, I hold a certification as a COPE Certified Independent Optavia Health Coach for nutritional advice, and am a Certified Neurolinguistic Programming Practitioner which helps to hone the mentality, and focuses the mind, of optimal performance. Fast forward about a decade and my wife and I have established a clinic here, in the Golden Heart City. We came to Fairbanks by way of Texas when I was offered a position with one of the local Naturopathic clinics. We have been a part this community since 2018 and have come to thoroughly enjoy the mix of personalities in the town and the scenery to escape towards. Like many, we came with the idea that we would homestead our property, which has proven to be even more challenging than we anticipated, but well worth the efforts. All in all, I feel that I'm like many who've picked Alaska, and especially Fairbanks, to make their life. We're happy to call it home because we believe in Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.
Physiokinetix is a neurological training method designed to optimize movement and eliminate pain. Myoskeletal Alignment Therapy is a neuromuscular treatment that combines the best soft tissue techniques and ideologies from advanced manual therapy, osteopathic manipulation, and Rolfing. With base principles of kinesiology rooted in theories put forth by Dr. Yanda and Dr. Rolf, my practice centers around strengthening the neural networks that connect the muscles and the brain. How those networks interact with your Myoskeletal system determines balance, alignment and function of the body. We know that no one modality fits every person, and no one treatment is the cure all, so we pull from a toolbox of techniques such as myofascial release, myoskeletal alignment, corrective exercise, brain based postural reprogramming, trigger point therapy, muscle energy techniques and isolated activation to name a few.
At the age of 11, I was hit by a truck while I was riding my bicycle. Obviously the truck won, and amongst the cuts and scrapes I broke the largest bone in the human body - my femur (thigh bone). That incident lead to two full body casts, a leg cast, 3 knee surgeries, tons of Physical Therapy and an anatomical discrepancy in leg length just short of 1/2in. Once I discovered Myoskeletal Alignment Therapy my eyes began to open. Then I realized the power of combining MAT with Corrective Exercise and that's when I realized that years of physical compensation could be undone and I didn't have the back pain or knee pain normally associated with having different leg lengths. The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn. Now, I get to help people learn new movement patterns that break the pain cycle they are in.
The rabbit hole that is bodywork started in Colorado for me. Having graduated amongst a small class of 10 from Higher Elevations Healing Arts in 2013 out of Vail, our education was intimate and our instructors took time to ensure we understood principles and theories related to body work. One of the instructors whom I gravitated towards both in philosophy of movement and style of practice was Jeff Draper of Vail Valley Rolfing. Over the next three years, while working in some world class spas like The Four Seasons Resorts and The Ritz Carlton, I soaked up every bit of clinical functional therapy I could get my hands on. I completed a course in Medical Massage and earned a national certification as a Medical Massage Practitioner MMP from Advanced Bodywork and Education as part of LMTSuccessGroup in 2016.
As of the time of this writing, I hold multiple certifications in Advanced Medical Massage, and Manual Therapy techniques. Currently I am the only Practitioner in the state of Alaska to carry the title of Physiokinetix Manual Therapist through the Temple of Human Performance and/or Master Myoskeletal Therapist MMT through the Freedom From Pain Institute. Master Myoskeletal Therapist MMT is the considered to be the industry Gold Standard of education in manual therapy, it demonstrates a commitment to ongoing education in our field, and is the culmination of years of practice. Physiokinetix is a Movement Therapy engineered to alleviate pain and train the brain to use new movement patterns for optimal control and performance. As 1 of 5 Practitioners in the state of Alaska, and the only in the Interior, to hold a national Medical Massage Practitioner MMP certification through LMTSuccesGroup, I have advanced training in both Anatomy and Kinesiology. In addition, while following the path of movement science, I found the Brookbush Institute of Human Movement Science. Through Brookbush, I completed both the Human Movement Specialist HMS and Certified Personal Trainer CPT courses. To better understand the applications functional movement, and to bring those movement patterns to more people, I decided to become Spartan SGX & DEKA Coach certified through Spartan Race for obstacle course race OCR training. The more I learned about the brain and its interactions with the body, the more I realized the need to hone the mentality for optimal performance and sought certification in Neurolinguistic Programming NLP. In order to further encompass the philosophy we embody in our practice, and the culture we promote in our clinic, I obtained Independent Certified Health Coach ICHC credentialing in weight management to further assist our patients in achieving their health goals.
Many myoskeletal conditions have an element of inflammation, pain, or poor circulation as one, or more, of the symptoms associated with the condition/illness. Taking a natural approach toward treating these in conjunction with bodywork, I sought certification in use, application, dosage and effects of CBD cannabis. This lead me to completing the Global Clinical Cannabinoid Medicine Curriculum and obtaining national certification as a Cannabinoid Clinician through The Medical Cannabis Institute. You can review all of my current certifications and licenses held here.
As a self proclaimed Nerd, I have learned that my passions aren't shared by all, unfortunately. However, my family has not only accepted my quirks, but they enjoy participating in them also. We like gardening, raising chickens, playing with our dogs and shooting our bows. We attended the Fairbanks ComiCon in full attire as the Firefly Crew, including our 4yo daughter. When not reading or working, you can find us practicing Hapkido or out on our homestead tending the the never ending list of chores.
