Uniquely customized for your specific goals, our systematic training leads to predictable, and measurable, results. Whether you want to get lean and cut, lose some weight and feel better, or level up your performance - we can help you get there.
Functional Movement Therapy encompasses multiple modalities of bodywork. Included in the toolbox is assessment, special tests, myofascial release, muscle energizing, muscle activation, soft tissue manipulation/mobilization, corrective exercise, mobility training, stability training, flexibility training and your Home Exercise Program to mitigate symptoms on your own.
One of our core beliefs at the CIA is: It is impossible to know where to go if you aren't sure of where are already. This belief requires having a baseline established and allows for a plan of action in reference to that established baseline.
Assessment is how we determine where you are on the functional movement scale and that, in turn, creates your baseline. Using a variety of assessments and special tests pinpoints what muscle(s) are not functioning properly, thus giving us an outline for your improvement and a way to quantify those improvements.
Soft tissues are those tissues that are not bones like muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and fascia to name a few. Manipulation and mobilization refers to advanced massage techniques, myofascial release techniques, oscillation and traction of connective tissue, active and passive stretching, compression of soft tissues, traction of soft tissues, muscle activation, neurological reeducation, and muscle energizing techniques.
Mobility, stability, endurance and strength training all fall under the umbrella of corrective exercise. Geared toward functional and pain free movement, corrective exercise programs are customized to each individual for your specific needs. The CIA subscribes to the ideal that even though there isn't a 'correct' functional movement to use as criterion, there are ranges establish for how each joint should move. Thus there is a guide for Optimal Movement that is relatable to everyone and can be fine tuned for each person.
HYPOmobility (feeling or being stiff) of a joint can be detrimental for that joint and is just as harmful as HYPERmobility (being 'really' flexible or 'double-jointed'). It wouldn't make sense to foster greater stability in a stiff joint just like it wouldn't make sense to stretch a the muscles around a joint that is overly mobile.
The CIA feels that just like each person has different symptoms and different pain / dysfunction, each person has the ability to manage their own treatment. Thus there is no 'one size fits all' exercise program. We customize your home exercise program to focus on the muscle and joint dysfunction that was discovered during the assessment portion of your treatment. We all know we need to exercise to stay healthy, and creating functional movement is the first step in maintaining a healthy body.
Utilizing an online platform, we provide everything you need to be a success at your HEP from sets/reps to demonstration videos to descriptions to a personalized workout log. These are just a few of the tools we provide you with in order to mitigate and alleviate your symptoms in your own way on your own time.
As Independent Certified Health Coaches, we guide people on their health journey. Recognizing a major pitfall of 'dieting' is not forming healthy habits, we provide a program that creates lifelong change through building those healthy habits one step at a time. Utilizing a physician engineered program with proven, and predictable, results, we focus on nutrient dense fuel for your body that has a balanced macro nutrient footprint and all of your essential vitamins needed to thrive. We prefer to focus on body composition and personal assessment of well-being in lieu of the number on the scale. In our experience, too many rules, too many measurements, too many calculations, and poor selection of foods tend to be the biggest reasons for failure when it comes to a weight management program. Our clients rave about their results after only 7-10 days and note that the ease of following the plan is one of the most motivational parts. Clients love that they don't have to go at this alone and love how we incorporate community support for encouragement and celebration of hitting milestones during their journey.
Posture is a snapshot of how we move and how our body 'feels relaxed'. Not just how we stand, it speaks to how we sit, how we sleep, if we have repetitive motions in work or play, and what movements are more difficult for us to do. The muscles that are 'short & tight' or 'overactive' are demonstrated through posture and how we hold our body shows where those areas of tension are.
Slumping, old lady's hump, and low back pain can all be attributed to posture issues. Just like going to the gym to build your arms, you have to teach your body what muscles to use again to regain optimal posture and thus optimal function and movement. Scoliosis, while not traditionally a postural dysfunction, is a common affliction in our society. We have had GREAT success with mitigating the distortion caused by scoliosis and in turn have had equal success in alleviating the pain associated with scoliosis.
Study after study shows not all exercise is created equal. Targeted, specific, exercises for dysfunction not only promotes optimal movement, it also allows for less fatigue, greater output of strength and power, faster recovery and better gains. (P)REhab, or Proprioceptive Re-Education & Habilitation, is exactly that - designed and targeted to your specific needs and goals. We use the analogy of driving a car: while most people CAN drive, very few are GOOD drivers, until they learn how. Just because you CAN do a squat doesn't mean you're doing it optimally, with good form, making sure you're not compensating or hurting yourself.
Not everyone is gym savvy knowing what exercise works which muscle(s), or how to use all those machines and benches... We take each person at their current fitness level and then develop a program customized to you. Focusing on proper form for functional movement, we utilize a process of release or lengthening of short tissues, isolated activation of under active muscles, core stabilization, integrated funtional movement, and reactive training to encourage pain free motion and optimal movement.
There is a process to the evolution of human movement. Most people go to the gym to get 'stronger' and often this isn't the best starting point for strength. In order to gain strength, we fist have to have optimal mobility and/or stability for function, then we encourage the endurance of muscle activity, progress to strength, and finish the evolution with power training. We use assessment to develop a customized plan to help you move past plateau or to level up your fitness!
Understanding that not everyone wants to travel to a clinic, or leave their house, in order to get treatment and mitigate their pain, the CIA provides telemedicine and Virtual Coaching for most of our services. You can enjoy everything we do from education and health coaching to personal training and postural correction. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the work, we cannot offer Manual Therapies like massage or soft tissue manipulation virtually.
Through the University of Alaska Fairbanks, and in accordance with Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), you can find us teaching Standing Taller & Living Longer - a fall prevention and posture correction course.
In addition, we regularly offer both virtual and in-person classses spotlighting body awareness and corrective techniques. Awareness gets you thinking about what habits you have that benefit you and which ones don't. Most of the techniques are designed to be used on your own, in your own home.
You have the opportunity to enjoy both in-person and virtual classes for posture correction, mobility training, stability training and endurance training. Interested in a class?? Find out when the next class starts at 907.328.5965.
CBD has become a hot topic in the medical and rehabilitative fields in the last few years. The CIA wholeheartedly supports natural and plant based remedies, and thus it should be no surprise we support the use of Clinical Grade Therapeutic Hemp and Cannabis products, for symptoms and ailments as a personal medical choice of each person. We have Nationally Certified Cannabis Clinicians to educate and assist in regards to which cannabinoid, or combination of cannabinoids, might assist you best. We can also discuss dosage, method of delivery, frequency of delivery and answer your questions about 'how' and 'what'.
